Mr. Shawnte’l “Shawn” Maurice Patton was born March 7, 1972 in Youngstown,  to Adella Patton and the late Edward Agee. He departed this life on May 2, 2017.

Shawn was a 1990 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and went on to attend Youngstown State University and became a member of the YSU football team for the 1990 season and again in 1994, when he helped the Penguins win a Division I-AA national championship in his final season.

He was known as “Goose” because of his ability to be elusive to many defensive lines on the football field.  During his football career at Campbell Memorial High School he helped  lead them to the 1989 State Championship Final.  He tallied a total of 3,429 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns in his high school career.  His senior year alone he rushed for 1,968 yards and 26 touchdowns.  He earned First Team All Mahoning Valley Conference honors his junior and senior years.  As a senior, he became one of nine Memorialites’ to be selected First Team All Ohio.  He still holds the single season rushing record at Memorial.

He played a prominent role in YSU’s 1994 National Championship.  His 1994 season was one of the best in YSU history  and  he became the Penguins’ top running back.  He was first all time in single- season all purpose yards (2,061), and second all time in single season rushing attempts  (332), rushing yards, (1,626) and 100 yard games.  He later went on to play in the European Football league for the London Monarchs.  Prior to his transition, Shawn  worked for the City of Youngstown in the Street Department.

In 1993 he surrendered his life to God and was baptized at Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church and later renewed his relationship with God at The Church of the Rock.

On August 24, 2007 Shawn entered into Holy Matrimony to Antionette Tisler who he affectionally called “Annie”.

While he had extensive accomplishments on the football field he was equally known for his quiet spirit while helping those in need off the field.  He especially had a love for working with children.  He coached and mentored providing both guidance and encouragement to many youth.

He leaves to cherish his memories,  his mother, Adella (Tru) Dixon of Pittsburgh, PA, his loving and devoted wife, Antionette Patton of Poland;  a daughter, Melanee Patton of Austintown; three sons,  MelQuan and Dominic Patton both of Campbell and Dorian Moton of Fort Knox, Kentucky; two step daughters, Paige and Nomiki Willis of Poland; sister, Sherilyn Land of Landover, MD; half siblings, Horace Agee and Callie Agee of Youngstown; three grandsons, Jazzciere Patton and Benjamin Patton-Fontanez of Austintown, and MelQuan Patton Jr. of Campbell;  grandmother, Bessie Patton of Youngstown;  two sister-in-laws, Filia Doctor and Carmel Sattarelle of Poland;  devoted aunts (special aunt Crystal Hill-Green); uncles, cousins (special cousins Jamiel Hill and Nikk Jones); godmother, Yolanda Charles, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Agee; step-father Melvin Land who reared him from 6 months of age to adulthood; son, Darius Patton; half-brother, Courtland Brown; grandparents, Joellen Patton, Thomas German, Horace and Callie Agee; his father-in-law, Frank Tisler, whom he lovingly cared for until his death; and mother-in-law Evangeline Tisler.
