Edward Smith
November 8, 1931 ~ April 14, 2014 (age 82) 82 Years OldServices will be Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church for Mr. Edward Smith, 82, who departed this life Monday, April 14, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Mr. Smith was born Nov. 8, 1931, in Youngstown, a son of Jack and Flora M. Barganier Smith.
He had worked in the transportation department of U.S. Steel Corporation Ohio Works, retiring in 1980 and had also worked at McKelvey’s/Higbee Department Store. He was a member of the Morning Star Baptist Church, its Male Chorus, Senior Choir, and Mahoning Shenango Valley Male Chorus; a former member of the Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Brotherhood Club; and the family attended the Elizabeth Baptist Church when it was on Forest Avenue. He was also a member of the NAACP and the Urban League. Edward enjoyed gardening and was the family historian.
His wife, the former Betty Jean Phillips, whom he married April 25, 1953, passed away Aug. 27, 2013.
He leaves to mourn his passing, but rejoice in his peace, his children, Jeffery (Shelia) Smith of Akron, Florene (Ron Jr.) Smith of Campbell, Kenneth (Renee) Smith of Memphis, Tenn., and Dora (Henry) Preston of Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert P. Smith of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Juanita Poole of Youngstown and Doris (Doug) Goyette of Pittsburgh; and a host of family and friends.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lela P. Smith; and three brothers, Willie O. Smith, William Smith and Jack Smith Jr.
