Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016, at the Victory Christian Center , Coitsville campus for Mr. James Carwell Sr., 78, who passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Mr. Carwell, affectionately known as “Jim,” was born Aug. 21, 1937, in Clio, Ala., a son of Richard Carwell and Clara M. Condrey. Mr. Carwell was a 1956 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and attended Youngstown State University. In 1955, his senior year, he was chosen as the outstanding player in the Steel Valley Conference. In 1996, he was inducted into Campbell Memorial High School Athletics Hall of Fame for football. He worked simultaneously with the Campbell Police Department, attaining the rank of sergeant, and the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. After 30 years with the police department, he retired in 1993, and then served at the Campbell Court as bailiff for Judge Almasy for eight years. He also worked as security for the Four Seasons Flea Market for over 15 years.

James was a former member and deacon at the Gospel Temple Baptist Church for over 70 years; and was most recently a member of the Victory Christian Center and its men’s Bible study class, under Pastor Jerome Minor. He leaves to forever cherish his memories, his wife, the former Gladys McKinney, whom he married May 24, 1969; five children, Diana Crenshaw of Boca Raton, Fla., Kathy (Gerald) Perkins and Karen Perkins, both of Youngstown, James (Sina) Carwell II of Junction City, Kan. and Damon Carwell of Cleveland; a special aunt, Bessie Herron of Youngstown; a special cousin, whom he helped to rear, Mary Alice Randall of Canton; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father; mother Clara Hart; and two children, Richard and Baby Carwell. Friends may call on Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church.
