Verdell Joyce Brown

Verdell Joyce “Dolly” Brown, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, departed this life on November 2, 2024, in Youngstown, Ohio, at the age of 66. Born on April 14, 1958, to Grace Watson Brown and Edd (Gwen) Brown, Dolly was a source of joy and inspiration to all who knew her. Dolly’s life was filled with passion, perseverance, and an unwavering love for her family, friends, and community. A proud graduate of The Rayen School (Class of 1977), she continued her studies at Lewis, Wineberger & Hill Cosmetology Academy, earning her certification in 1980. Dolly dedicated 44 years to the beauty profession, establishing herself as an esteemed beauty professional and the proud owner operator of HairFx. She was a trailblazer in her field, working at the first “shop-in-shop” salon focused on Black hair care for Strauss, known as BHI—the first of its kind in the country. Dolly’s clients adored her for her signature phrase, “MORE HAIR,” and her undeniable talent, which earned her features in numerous notable hair care magazines. Beyond her career, Dolly had a profound love for music, dancing, and cooking. Known for her “culinary ministry,” Dolly, along with her late companion Earl V. Smith, prepared and served food for the AME regional annual conference, a role that brought her great pride and joy. A devoted member of Reed’s Chapel AME Church, she also served with the Gatewood Watson Missionary Society, demonstrating her dedication to her faith and community. Dolly’s life was full of love, especially for her children: Dawn Brown, Tiara Johnson, Destini Hilson, and Tre’ Von Harrison.  Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Ja’Michael Johnson, Journei Washington, Jade Johnson, Christopher Royal Jr., Makayla Royal, and Mikyelle Royal. She was also a devoted “bonus” mother figure to her cousin, April Cianciola, whom she helped raise, and leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, stepchildren, godchildren, extended family, and friends. Dolly was predeceased by her parents, her companion Earl V. Smith, her brothers Arthur R. Ward Sr. and Edward S. Brown, and her granddaughter, Myracle Royal. She is survived by her siblings: Richard F. Ward Jr., Reverend Gwendolyn Johnson, Scott (Tonya) Brown, Glen Brown, Wendell (Becky) Brown, Rodney Logan, and Ebonye Bowman-Brown.   Dolly’s love, laughter, and incredible talents will forever be remembered by those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her family invites all who knew and loved her to join them in celebrating her life and legacy.
