Mrs Velma Mae Raines, 96, was called to rest on Friday, October 24th, 2025 at her home in Youngstown, Ohio.
Velma was born October 17, 1929 in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late Clarence and Archie (Sibley) Hollis. Known as “Veedie” to friends and family, she was a 1947 graduate of East High School and graduated from Choffin’s Practical Nursing School, fulfilling a nursing career that spanned over 50 years at both Northside Hospital and St. Elizabeth Hospital, where she retired from in 1991. She was a member of Christian Fellowship Tabernacle and later Kingdom Fellowship Community church.
“Nanny” leaves to cherish her memory her niece, Cheryl Moss with whom she made her home; her nephew, Neil Moss; great nephews, Neil Moss II, Kevin Moss and Chris Moss; great nieces, Joy Moss, Olivia Colmon, Nautica Moss, Jasmine Edwards; 15 grand nieces and nephews; and three great grand nieces.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Ezma Louise Moss Winsley, an infant sister, Velma Winsley; nephews, Clarence Moss and Wayde Winsley; and her husband, Clyde Raines, whom she married in 1952.
She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Visitation will be Monday, November 3, 2025 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the L. E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home, 1951 McGuffey Rd., Youngstown, OH 44505. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 a.m.
