Tena Green Obituary

Ms. Tena Mae Green

Mother Tena Mae Green, 103, transitioned to her heavenly mansion, on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at her home with her loving family by her side.  She was born July 15, 1921 in Winston Salem, North Carolina the daughter of Charlie Green and Fannie Mae Bostic.  Although her birth certificate states “Tina” she preferred “Tena” better.

During her senior years, she was employed as both a nurse assistant and private duty caregiver for several years in Boston, MA, returning to Youngstown and working for a Foster Parenting and Tutoring program where she was assigned to tutor children at Sheridan Elementary School, also receiving numerous awards for her endeavors in this program. While at Sheridan, we was affectionly known as “Grandma.” She was a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church, where she served as Mother of the Church. She participated in Sunday school, Bible Study, Senior Choir and Culinary Ministries and had also served in the custodial department and she loved her Church Family dearly.

Mother Tena Mae Green (grandma) helped raise some of her grandchildren:  Charles Butler, April Evans and great-grandchildren:  Nate Hasley, Marquise Hasley (caregiver for great-grandmother who returned to live with her during her last years) and Brandon Hasley. Some other grand and great-grandchildren temporarily stayed with her as well throughout the years. She was a very independent “Lady.” She was the caregiver for her father, mother and close relatives until their passing. She was well known for the love and devotion she had towards her mother Fanny Wyatt (100 years old at the time of passing).

Grandma will be missed and remembered for bringing family together for holiday gatherings. She loved attending the house of the Lord and singing His praises such as, “Yes, Jesus Loves Me and Payday is Coming Afterwhile,” and how she enjoyed meeting people and making them feel welcomed. In her younger days, grandma made her home available and welcomed many young people she met from her church to play Monopoly, Checkers and Pick-up Sticks (she was great with Pick-up Sticks).

She wore many many “Hats” such as, being a Great Advisor to our family and friends by listening and giving great, Godly direction and support. She was a great Prayer Intercessor by praying with other from Mt. Calvary and in her own home, she had hosted prayer meetings as well as hold them wherever she went. Grandma was a wonderful Sunday School teacher, teaching the children of Mt. Calvary. She was a proud member of the choir, singing in the tenor section. A special memory “Handel’s Messiah” concert at the Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church. She was a waitress and a landlord in New York as well as a truck driver.

She is survived by her grand-children; Isaac (Laura) Floyd, Kevin Valentine and Charles Floyd of Dayton, OH; Janet Butler, Charles Butler, Bruce Hasley, Virginia High, Victoria Hendrix, April Evans, Derise Hasley, Benard Hasley, and Isaac Hasley all of Youngstown and Warren, OH; and a host composed of 5 generations of great-grandchildren over 80 and counting. She was very happy to have raised; Nate Hasley, Marquise L. Hasley (caregiver who returned to live with her) and Brandon Hasley. She mentioned “They are great company.” She would often be seen taking her great-grandsons out to eat dinner, taking them to church and receiving “Perfect Attendance” at their schools. She loved flowers and gardening and being outdoors which influenced her great-grandson Marquise to be great at taking care of their garden and to become a Skilled Carpenter.

Besides her Parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Mr. Samuel Floyd and her daughter Freddie Lee Hasley; Grandchildren; Nathaniel Hasley, Beverly Hasley, and Felicia Mullins; 5 Great-grandchildren and 1 Great-great-grandchild.
