Sylvester Jackson, Jr. Obituary

Mr. Sylvester Jackson, Jr passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025 at the age of 96. He was born on April 11, 1929, in Youngstown, OH, son of Mr. Sylvester Jackson, Sr and Marion Bell Jackson.

Sylvester graduated from Chaney High School in 1948. He attended Youngstown State University where he became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.  He married the love of his life Gertrude Napier in 1951, whom he affectionately called Mama-San. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a communications specialist.

Sylvester was the first African American Foreman at the General Motors Lordstown Plant. He was very instrumental in helping many African Americans get hired.  He retired after 26 years.

Sylvester lived his life to the fullest. He enjoyed being with his family during the holidays, Christmas was his favorite.  He was a member of the Crème De La Crème couples club for over 50 years.  He was an avid bowler in the Youngstown Bowling Leagues. His favorite pastime was going to the Casino.

Sylvester leaves to cherish his memory, one sister Beatrice Lymore, three daughters, Christal Hill, Sylvia Lawrence, Monica Limerick (Courtney), four grandchildren, Nikki Keyona Hill, Donald Luke Lawrence II, Danielle Marie Lawrence, Devin Trevor Limerick. Two great grandchildren, Leia Armoni Carr and Logan Taylor Carr II, nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Jackson, his parents, one brother Leon Jackson, five sisters Melvine Reid, Thelma Bronson, Mary McCullough, Louise Shaw, and Marion Easter.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm Saturday, October 25, 2025 at the Fellows Riverside Gardens Gazebo, Mill Creek Park, 123 Mckinley Ave Youngstown, OH 44509.
