Reginald Dwight Powers, Sr.

                Reginald Dwight Powers Sr., affectionately known as “Red” to some and “Reggie” to   others, 77 of Campbell, Ohio, transitioned from labor to reward on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown, Hospital.

                Reggie (Red) was born on April 23, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of Benjamin and Eunice Samuels Powers.  Upon graduating, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army from 1966 – 1968, during the Vietnam Era.  Initially he served as paratrooper and a year later reported to Vietnam as a medical specialist.  While serving his country he received the National Defense Service Medal, one Oversea Bar, a Parachutist Badge, a Vietnam Service Medal w/2 bronze Service Stars, an Army Commendation Medal (1st Award), a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/Device 1960, A Marksman (Rifle M--14) and a Good Conduct Medal (First Award).

                After being honorably discharged from the U.S Army, Reggie was briefly employed by the U.S. Postal Service, in Cleveland.  Later he was hired by the General Motors (GM) Chevy plant in Cleveland. Reggie transferred to the GM Lordstown plant, shortly after its opening, where he faithfully worked for 30 years, retiring in 2006.

                A man of few words, Reggie loved God first, his family, and his life time friends.  He particularly enjoyed cruising, and traveling (especially with his children and grandchildren).  He enjoyed hosting and attending cookouts, family holiday celebrations and social gatherings.  He especially enjoyed attending the grandchildren’s sporting events: soccer, track, basketball, football, and volleyball.  He was very proud of them all, and especially that they all played sports at the collegiate level.  He was a loyal Cleveland Browns and Cavalier fan and enjoyed boxing.  Of late he became a diehard fan of the Oklahoma University Sooners football team, where his namesake, Reggie Powers III, now plays football.

                Reggie’s passion was working in his yard, he loved not only the care and maintenance of his property, but was actively involved in annually revising and supervising the aesthetic landscaping design of it.   Friends and family would reach out to him for product and lawn equipment advice on a regular basis.  In our community, he was often recognized and referred to as the man that lives on the corner lot that is always immaculately maintained and cared for.    He was a strong prideful man who recognized that he was a Blessed man and regularly acknowledged that all of his Blessings came from God. 

                He leaves to mourn his passing, but to rejoice in his eternal peace, his beloved and devoted wife of over 50 years, the former Vivian Manley.  He also leaves two loving children, Danielle D. (Toney) Griffin of Twinsburg, and Reginald D. (Tricia) Powers, Jr. of Centerville; six grandchildren, Destiny, Camari, Cameron, Tre, Reginald III and Andersen, as well as three bonus grandchildren, Renard, David, Imani, and; two nephews, Richard K. Powers, Jr. and Christopher L. Powers whom he reared as a teenager, and several others who affectionately called him “Grandpa Red”, and a host of loving cousins, extended family and dear friends.

                Reggie was preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Eunice Powers, his grandparents Herbert and Lucy Samuels, and his brother Richard K. Powers.

                Reginald Dwight Powers Sr.’s legacy of faith, authenticity and love lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

                Visitation will be Saturday, November 1, 2025 from 10 am – 11 am at the Rising Star Baptist Church, 2943 Wardle Avenue, Youngstown, OH 44505.  A celebration of life will follow at 11 am.
