Phillips Darnell Whitman

            Mr. Phillip Darnell Whitman, 70, of Youngstown, transitioned from his earthly labor to his heavenly reward on Friday, June 27, 2025.

            Mr. Whitman was born July 5, 1954 in Youngstown, a son of Samuel J. and Georgia M. Matthews Whitman.  Phillips was a U.S. Marine veteran, and following his tour of duty with the Marines, became a Deputy Sheriff with the Mahoning County Sheriff Department for 24 years, retiring in 2011.  After his retirement from the Sheriff’s Department, he worked as head of security with Mahoning County High School.  Phillip was a member of the Black Knights Organization and F. O. P.  He enjoyed fishing, movies, traveling, grilling, and his delightful hot tub.  He was an avid Cleveland Browns fans, however, his passion and love was for his grandchildren, great grandchildren and family.

            He leaves to cherish his memory and his legacy, three children, Lateka Whitman and Phillip D. Whitman II both of Youngstown, and Darnell R. Whitman of Cleveland; nine grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; two sisters, Jackie (Kenneth) McKoy and Debra Greer both of Pennsylvania; a brother Gerald (Nancy) Whitman of Campbell; a brother-in-law, Robert Peterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

            Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Laverne Peterson.

            Visitation will be Tuesday, July 8, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.  Funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon.
