Mr. Octagen Leggett, affectionately known as “Big-O” and “Teggy,” was born on January 7, 1938, in Hemmingway, South Carolina. He was the beloved son of Sterret and Mary Rosabelle Leggett.
Mr. Leggett was married on April 2, 1959 to Marion Elaine Singletary, a marriage of 64 years. Mr. Leggett began his career with United States Steel Corporation in 1956, where he worked faithfully until his retirement in 1984. Demonstrating his determination and entrepreneurial spirit, he later co-owned and operated Leggett Trucking for Hire with his devoted wife, Marion Leggett. Together, they built a respected business, which he proudly maintained until retiring in 2019. Mr. Leggett enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing and hosting a good fish frywhere the food was always plentiful, and the stories got just a little bigger with each telling. He took great pride in maintaining his lawn and keeping his mowers in top condition; if it had an engine, he believed it should run right—and if it didn’t, he’d tell you exactly why. His true passion, however, was working on cars and trucks, and he never hesitated to offer his knowledge, advice, or a “better way” to get the job done. Not to leave out the fun “we” had with the card games and a little game of craps! A good game where there weren’t enough chairs, now you have one more. He was also a loyal fan of the Cleveland Browns, faithfully keeping hope alive for a Super Bowl victory year after year—proving his patience and unwavering faith extended well beyond Sunday prayers. Although he did not have a church home, Mr. Leggett was deeply committed to his relationship with God and was known as a true prayer warrior. Mr. Leggett transitioned from this earthly life on March 15, 2026.
He leaves to mourn his passing, but to celebrate his life and legacy, three children, Michele Buggs, Roslyn Green( Isaac Smith), Jeffrey (Stephanie) Leggett, all of Youngstown; six grandchildren, Antwan Leggett, Jonathan Buggs, Duane Leggett Jr, Brittany (Floyd) Rogers III, Timothy Jones, and Marshon Jones; four great grandchildren; his siblings , Caritha, Claudia Jean, and Hasper Leggett; and a host of nieces and nephews, including James Leggett, whom he helped to rear, other family and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Marion Singletary, whom he married in 1961 and who passed away December 19, 2023; two sons, Octagen Leggett Jr. and Duane Leggett Sr.; and his siblings, Andrew Lee, Billy Joe, Freddie, and Jerry Leggett.
Mr. Leggett will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his wisdom, his humor, and the lasting love he shared with family and friends.
The family asks that you kindly join them on Saturday, March 21, 2026 for visitation 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. at Gospel Temple Baptist Church, 279 Whipple Ave., Campbell, OH 44405. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 10:00 a.m.
