Mr. Robert Lee Dixie, Sr., 76, of Youngstown, Ohio transitioned from his earthly labor to his heavenly reward at St. Joe’s Hospital on Friday, January 31, 2025.Mr. Dixie, known as “Bobby” and “Poppy”, was born on October 4, 1948 in Youngstown, a son of James and Odessa (Vaughn) Dixie.
He was a 1966 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, where he was a member of the Red Devils track team and set a record for the 100 yard dash in 1966, a record that still stands to this day. Upon graduation, Bobby was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served two tours of duty in Vietnam as part of the 101st airborne and the 44th medical brigade. He was honorably discharged in 1973.
In 1973, inside of Kilcawley Center on the campus of Youngstown State University, he met the love of his life, Beverly Jean Williams. They were united in Holy Matrimony on March 2, 1974 and celebrated 50 glorious years together on March 2, 2024 during a lavish anniversary celebration.
Bobby went on to work at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center for 20 years as a Surgical Technician. He then returned to YSU and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Social Work. He went on to work for Compass Family Community Services and East Liverpool City Hospital as a Licensed Social worker before his health forced his retirement in 2011.
Bobby was a big family man and was supportive of his children and grandchildren in all of their academic and sports endeavours, showing up and cheering loudly. He was proud of his family, as he should be, and was extremely family oriented, loving on everyone around him. He was a former member of Butler Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a current member of Word In Action Ministry under the leadership of Pastor William R. Burney. Bobby touched many lives and was a true friend to many.
In addition to his wife Beverly, he leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Stephanie (Anthony) Jones, and son, Robert (Crystal) Dixie, Jr. His legacy will be carried on by his 8 grandchildren, Anthony, Mioma, Adriane, Brandi, Adrianna, Ayris, Robert II and Christian; and 6 great-grandchildren, Aleena, Daniela, Aliana, Ameena, Alani, and Asher, and baby boy due in April; Bobby also leaves 2 sisters, Shirley Peace and Barbara Dykes; 3 brothers, Charles (Jacqueline), Lawrence (Eileen) and Earl Dixie. Sisters-in-law, Debra Green, Mary Dixie, Cassantra Clinkscale, Janice (Seraphin) Okello, Beatrice Williams, and Constance (Charles) Fitzpatrick and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Roy Williams, Jeraleen (Isenhour) Williams-Lacey, and MG Lacey; his brothers Alwayne Green, Sr. and Arthur Dixie, Sr. and brothers-in-law, Leroy Clinkscale, and Gregory, Floyd, Alan, and Ronald Williams.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 11, 2025 from 11:00am - 12:00 noon at Word In Action Ministry, 150 9th St., Campbell, Ohio. A celebration of life will follow at noon.
