Janay Hagerty

Janay Hagerty, 63, of Youngstown, departed this life on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Janay was born February 8, 1962 in Roscoe, New York, daughter of Mary Ann Meola and James O’Brien.  Janay is beloved and we are less without her. She was a caring, kind, and altruistic person that gave all she had to give to her family and her people. She touched so many lives as a Sifu (teacher) of Kung Fu, a critical incident response team volunteer counselor during her 25 year career with American Airlines, as a mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, friend, coworker, community member; volunteering her time and energy on behalf of the initiatives of  The Ladies Shrine of North America, which she was a member of, and for the Rotary club of Youngstown on behalf of her daughter.

She wrote poetry, loved to crochet blankets and scarves to wrap her people in symbolic safety, warmth, and her love and good intentions. She was an avid Star Trek fan, a lover of the arts and literature, and an avid supporter of the public library .She will be remembered and missed by many, for whom it was a blessing to know and be loved by her.

She leaves to mourn her passing, but to celebrate her life and legacy, her mother, Mary Ann Hagerty of Virginia Beach, VA; her daughter, Jessica Romeo (Matthew Williams) and grandson, Zappa Romeo of Youngstown; her siblings, Kathleen (Donald) Staten of Virginia Beach, VA,  Jeffrey (Melissa) Hagerty and Randy (Lisa) Hagerty both of New Jersey, and Timothy Hagerty of Florida.

Besides her father, Janay was preceded in death by her husband, Del E. Jones, sister, Carol Ann Hagerty; and brother, William Hagerty.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home, 1951 McGuffey Road, Youngstown, OH 44505.
