Florence Gordon

Florence Marie Gordon transitioned from this earthly life to her heavenly home on Monday, September 17, 2018 in Lynchburg, VA.

Mrs. Gordon was born July 24, 1925 in Farrell, PA, a daughter of Lee Oliver and Grace Darling Bailey.  She was educated in the Youngstown City School System, graduated from South High School in 1943, and received her BS degree in Education from Youngstown College (now known as Youngstown State University).  She enjoyed her professional years as an educator and later worked worked as an office manager for the late Dr. William R. Johnson.  Florence dedicated her life’s work to her church, St. Andrewes AME Church, where she was a steward, financial secretary, VBS and Sunday School teacher and on the Culinary Committee.  Florence was also an outstanding seamstress, you name it she could do it.   She enjoyed word search puzzles, floral gardening, helping the sick and shut-ins and listening to her favorite gospel group, Lee Williams and The QC’s. While in Virginia, she attended The Greater Peaceful Zion Baptist Church, and was a mother to everyone in the church.

Florence married the love of her life, Reuben James Gordon, on March 19, 1949.  Reuben transitioned from this life on April 17, 2011.

She leaves to mourn her passing, but to rejoice in her eternal peace, her daughter, Grace D. (Rev. Walter) Randolph of Virginia, with whom she made her home; her son, Reuben “Gary” (Doris Jean) Gordon of Youngstown;  a sister,  Lillian Johnson;  four grandchildren, Tiffany D. Gordon, Reuben G. Gordon, Jr., Jacci (Kevin) Cylar and Darsha (Doan) Clark; six great grandchildren, Kevin, Jr., Zane and Payten Cylar, Daisha Clark, Lil Doan D. McKinney and Makayla Moore; and a host of family and friends.

She was greeted at Heaven’s Gate by her parents and husband; siblings, Dorothy Lee Brown, Mabel Lee, Essie Pettiford, Lorraine DeShields, Algian Bailey, Warner Bailey and Leo Bailey.

Friends may call Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. at the church.  Funeral services will follow immediately at 10:00 a.m.  Arrangements entrusted the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
