Cortland R. Casey

Mr. Cortland R. Casey, 71, of Youngstown, transitioned from his earthly labor to his heavenly home on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving and devoted wife and family.

            Mr. Casey was born May 23, 1952 in Youngstown, a son of Ernest and Irene Williams Casey.  He was a 1970 graduate of East High School.    Casey was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, head of its security team, a former Deacon and Male Chorus member.  He was also a past member and 1st president of the Black Knights.  He was also a member of the staff at the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.

Casey served as a deputy sheriff for Mahoning County for 30 years, retiring in 2007. He worked on corrections patrol for Campbell police department per diem.  He was associated with the Shades of Blue Police Association.  In the early stages of his career, he worked side by side with his father with prisoner transport and retired in 2007.

Casey enjoyed watching the Three Stooges, war movies and old westerns.  There is one thing that everyone knew about Cortland Casey and that is he was a “true and dedicated fan” of the Washington Redskins (now known as the Commanders).

            Cortland leaves to mourn his passing, but to celebrate his life and legacy, his beloved wife, the former Kathryn Timmons, whom he married November 11, 2007; his daughter, Valarie J. (Roscoe) Casey-Thurston of Youngstown; his sons, Cortland R. Casey Jr. of Campbell and Joshua R. Williams of Orlando, FL; his stepchildren, Nechelle E. (Eric) Marlowe and Jason E. (Tiffany) Thomas both of Columbus; 7 grandchildren, Anissa, Bobby, Jeremiah, Akeeyla, Ayanna, Jayden and Nyla; 5 great grandchildren; one sister, Sharon D. Perry of Columbus; three brothers, Ernest L. Casey Jr. of Dallas, TX, Ronald (Delphine) Casey of Boardman, and Daryl Casey of Atlanta, GA; his cousins who were like an older sister and brother to him, Marlie Byrd and Carl North; and a host of family, church family and friends.

            Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by and brother-in-law, Ronald Perry.
