Byron Wynn Sims

Byron Wynn Sims, 58 of Youngstown, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.  Byron was born on September 14, 1966, in Englewood, NJ. He was the son of the late George Albert Sims and Nancy Sims (formerly Nancy McCollum). He graduated from Kennedy High School, Paterson, NJ in 1984. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and completed his training at Fort Dix in NJ (Company B55) and honorably served from 1984 -1988. He worked for many years as a Sergeant for Odom Prison in Jackson, NC. He later moved to Campbell, Ohio and became a truck driver, which was his lifelong passion. It is in Ohio where he met his sweetheart and partner Sharlene Dean of Youngstown, OH.

Preceding him in peace are his paternal grandparents Jack Sims and Elma Sims, maternal grandparents Archie McCollum and Annie Mae McCollum, parents George Albert Sims and Nancy Sims, uncle Alexander McCollum, aunt Mary “Sister” Bebbs, uncle James Sims, uncle Willie “Bill” Sims, uncle Johnnie Sims, nephew Leon Sims, and brother-in-law Curtis Moses.

Byron is survived by; his aunt Thelma Johnson and aunt Willet Sims, both of Campbell, OH,  sister Crystal Moses of Great Mills, MD, and cousins whom he loved as brothers and sisters,  James Earl Sims,  Willie “BJ” Sims both of Youngstown, OH, Keith Sims of  Canton, OH, Jacqueline Sims of Campbell, OH, Donna Lofton of Great Mills, MD, James “JJ” Johnson, George Sims II, Evelyn McWilson, and Elma ” Red” Sims all of Campbell, OH.

Byron has nephews and nieces whom he loved as his own as well as great-nieces and nephews. He was lovingly known as “Uncle” and “Unk”. His nieces and nephews are Monica Whitaker (h: William “Key-Key” Whitaker) of Rich Square, NC, Nancy Clay of Jackson, NC, and Justice Moses of Winton, NC.

His great-nieces and nephews are Exzabian Harrell and Latrice Harrell of Ewing, NJ, William” Junior” Whitaker and Sarah Whitaker of Rich Square, NC, Curtis Moses II, Ricky Clay III, Zaniyah Clay of Jackson, NC, and Aidan Moses of Winton, NC.

Byron is also survived by a host of cousins and other family members as well as friends.

He loved watching sports, playing basketball and was a huge fan of the NY Giants. He enjoyed listening to old school “1970 – early 2000’s R&B music, playing cards (especially “Spades”) with friends and family. He was family oriented and enjoyed spending time with his relatives.

A funeral service will be held at L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home at 1951 McGuffey Rd, Youngstown, OH 44505 on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 11:00 AM. The calling hour is from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM.
