Byrdell Hill, 90, departed this life on Saturday, September 21, 2024 surrounded by her family. Byrdell was born in Opelika, AL on June 6, 1934 to Sam and Mattie Gamble, the oldest of 13 children. The family later relocated to Waverly Hall, GA.
As a young woman, she moved to Campbell, OH and lived with her aunt. Sometime later, she married the late Oscar Hill Sr. and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church. To this union, 6 children were born. Byrdell was an active member of the church. Throughout the years, she served as the Youth Choir Supervisor, member of the Adult Choir, Senior Choir, Deaconess Board and General Mission. One of her favorite solos was “Through It All…I’ve Learned to Trust in Jesus”. She also served as chairperson of several church anniversary programs.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed shopping, cooking, gardening and spending time with her family. This year, Byrdell was honored by her family with a 90th birthday celebration. Byrdell was a loving and caring mother/grandmother with a sense of humor yet firm with a no-nonsense aptitude.
Byrdell was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Hill Sr., and three children, Oscar Hill Jr., Vivian T. Hill, Randy Hill and several siblings.
She is survived by three children, Queen (Stewart) Franklin of Boardman, OH, Patricia (Anthony) Farris of Canton, MI and Herman L. (Tajuana) Hill of Akron, OH. She leaves 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves a sister, Princella Woods of Twentynine Palms, CA and brother, Ike Walton of Waverly Hall, GA, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be Saturday, October 5, 2024 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 827 Wilson Ave., Youngstown, OH. A celebration of life service will follow at 10:00 a.m.
