Barbara Jennings Phillips Mayo

           Ms. Barbara Jennings Phillips Mayo was born on May 11, 1947 in Littleton, North Carolina to Mary Eliza Houston Mills and Henry Alston.  She departed this life on Thursday, June 19, 2025 in Eufaula, Alabama.

            Barbara later moved to Youngstown where she met and married Mr. Claxton Phillips.  From that union five children were born, Sheila, Claxton, David, Tangela and Tramaine Phillips.  Mr. Claxton passed away in 2007.

            Barbara then moved to Eufaula, Alabama, where she became a member of St. John AME Church under the leadership of the late Pastor A. C. Mixon.  She remained an active member as a Missionary, Congregational Care Member, Silver Addition Member and Sunday School until her passing.  She also met and married Mr. Elijah Mayo.  Mr. Mayo preceded her in death.

            She is survived by her daughters, Tangela and Tramaine Phillips; grandchildren, Juan Phillips, James Steward, Jamesha Steward, Jamal Penny, Eshone Christian, Elton Christian, Brekasia Schroeder, Fredrick Christian, Chyna, Jaron, Marquis, and Claxton Lebron; 20 great grandchildren; one sister, Christine Houston; and a host of nieces and nephews.  Barbara also leaves to mourn her passing, her close friends, Pat Ivey, Bernie Harris, Eric Walt, Terrance Tucker (godson), Emma Shaw, Ed Barker and Martha Rahming.

            Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila; sons, Claxton and David Phillips; grandson, Yaraldean Thomas; and brother, Bennie Houston.

            Services were held Wednesday, July 2, 2025 in Eufaula, Alabama.

            Local arrangements were entrusted to the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home, Youngstown, OH.
