Obituary

Mr. Algie Edwards Thompkins Jr. 74, of Youngstown Ohio, entered Eternal Rest on Thursday, March 11, 2021.

Algie Jr. born on November 19, 1946 in Youngstown Ohio, to Algie E. Thompkins Sr. and Ruby Foster Thompkins as the eldest of 8 children.  He attended and graduated from North High School Class of 1966. After his graduation he enlisted in The United States Army and served from 1966- 1970.  After he returned home to Youngstown, Ohio he exchanged vows with his wife Loretta (Turney) Thompkins in 1971. He worked in the steel industry until his retirement from WCI Steel in 2006 and was a dedicated member of Alpha and Omega 1st Baptist Church and its Food Pantry Ministry until his passing.

Algie Jr. was known for his excellent wine making skills and green thumb and was always bearing gifts. He loved fishing, gardening, music, dancing, and supporting his grandchildren when they played sports. He enjoyed get togethers and needed no excuse to show off his distinguished wardrobe made complete with an accompanying hat.  His outfits were unforgettable and left many looking forward to see what outfit he was going to step out in next. Being a “social butterfly”, his love of a good conversation shined through any social engagements. Not known to meet a stranger, he enjoyed sparking up conversation with anyone. He was gifted in producing home-made wine that complemented any occasion from relaxing at home, to promotions, to weddings, and like his wine, his presence contributed greatly to the setting of any event.  He enjoyed nature and took pride in growing and donating his vegetables to the Alpha and Omega 1st Baptist Food Pantry.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, the former Loretta Turney; three children, Katrina Thompkins of Youngstown; Algie E. (Amanda) Thompkins III, and Kevin (Tranay Davis) Thompkins both of Columbus; six grandchildren, Sheldon McGhee, Cortez Dixon, Braylen Thompkins, Kevin-Pierre Thompkins, Quinn Thompkins, and Amiyah-Marie Thompkins; two sisters Maxine Watkins and Gloria Thompkins both of Youngstown; four brothers Raymond (Lachelle) Thompkins and James Thompkins, both of Youngstown, Eugene (Beverly) Thompkins of New York, Bobby (Lynn) Thompkins of Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Jacqueline Barrett.

A walk through will be held on Saturday March 20, 2021, 9:00 – 10:00 am at Alpha and Omega First Baptist Church. Private funeral services will follow for family. Due to the Pandemic, all guests are asked to please wear masks and observe social distancing. For the health and safety of everyone, we ask that guests do not linger at the church after viewing.
