Mr. Martin was born September 26, 1938 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, a son of James and Mary Simms Martin. He and his sister Eleanor Martin-Myrick were raised in New Jersey with their grandfather before moving to New York with their mother.  He had worked for the post office in New York City for several years before accepting a position with the New York Transit Service.  He worked there as a trackman for 25 years until his retirement. He also worked with Garwin Transportation after relocating to Youngstown. Richard attended Victory Christian Center. Mr. Martin married Isabella Gordon in February of 1960, and to this union was born Wanda and Richard Jr. He loved spending quality time with his family and his dog, “Diamond.”  A giving, kindhearted and sensitive man, Richard enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and devoting his time and service to others.  He maintained his connections with his family in Asbury Park, New Jersey.  Richard was a U. S. Army veteran. After being honorably discharged from the military in 1958, he reconnected with the Army Reserves.

Mr. Martin is survived by his daughter, Wanda (Jeffrey) Clark of Warren; his son, Lance Martin of New Jersey; his sister, Eleanor Myrick; daughter-in-law, Melba Abron; sister-in-law, Zada Gaines; special friend, Thitru Ward and her daughter, Qlien; 10 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Richard G. Martin, Jr.

Friends may call Wednesday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
