Philip L. "Butch" Greene

Services will be Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church 1210 Himrod Avenue, for Mr. Philip L. Greene, Jr., 60, of Cleveland who transcended from this earthly tabernacle to his heavenly home on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the Cleveland Clinic.

            Mr. Greene, lovingly known as “Butch” was born May 8, 1958 in Youngstown, a son of Philip L. Sr. and Beulah L. Davis Greene.  He was a 1977 graduate of East High School.  Philip had worked in the custodial department of Cleveland State University for 15 years, and previously worked with the R. A. Prince Funeral Home.  He was a former member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church before moving to Cleveland and joining the Holy Trinity Baptist Church in Cleveland.  He was a member and vice president of the Sophisticated Gents and the New Beginnings Social Club.  He was a steward with the Cleveland State Communication Workers of America (CWA), Local 4309.  He enjoyed cooking and grilling.

            He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, the former Johnnie M. McKinney Spates of Cleveland; four children, Cara (Rev. Adam) Kirkland-Giles of Akron, Nathaniel P. Greene, Cassandra Spates and Chawandra Spates all of Cleveland; two sisters, Patricia Bellard and Brenda (Carl) Williams both of Youngstown; his brother-in-law, Andrew Benson of Youngstown; Rev. J. Dwayne Heard who was like a brother to him; three grandchildren including Arnell and Cortell whom he helped rear, and Ciarra; four great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

            He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Kathleen Carter and Cheryl Benson.

            Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church.  Arrangements entrusted to the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
