Pearlie Sledge Obituary

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2018 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, for Mrs. Pearlie M. Sledge whose new life began May 10, 2018, when the Lord told her “you have fought a good fight, you’ve finished your course and you’ve kept the faith and now it’s time to rest.”

Mrs. Sledge was born March 3, 1929 in Leesburg, GA., a daughter of Enoch and Magdalene Clayton Carter.  She moved to Campbell, Ohio in the summer of 1946.  She graduated from Campbell Memorial High School with honors.  She spent her entire career in food service having worked for Republic Steel Mill and Mary’s Eat Shop and various other restaurants. She was a highly requested short order cook and had many patrons follow her.  She was a former member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Campbell and was currently a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.  She loved cooking and was known for her helpful giving spirit to many family members and friends when needed.  She had an indescribable fortitude of love, generosity and a quiet gentle and forgiving heart.  She encouraged her children to give, not expecting to receive and treat people the way you would like to be treated and always smile.     Pearl does not leave anyone to mourn her, but rather to cherish her memory and celebrate her new life her children, Dianne Drake of Birmingham AL., Denise Y. Mays and Kevin T. Sledge both of Atlanta, GA, and her exquisite impeccable caregiver daughter, Gwendolyn J. Sledge, with whom she made her home; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings Edward (Ida) Carter of Miami, FL., Rev. Roosevelt (Rev. LaVerne) Carter of Leesburg, GA., Kate (Fred) Askew of Albany, GA. and Willie (Sharon) Carter of Chicago, IL and a host of other relatives and friends..     She was preceded in death by her beloved parents; two sisters, Ann Smith and Mittie Johnson; a brother, Rodolph Carter; and sons-in law, Robert “Bobby” Drake and James Mays.

Friends may call one hour prior to the services 10-11:00 a.m. at the church.  Arrangements  entrusted to L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
