Services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at the Greater Friendship Baptist Church for Mrs. Jewel D. Black, 78, of Youngstown, who peacefully and quietly transitioned to her heavenly home on Tuesday, September 13, 2018 at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Health Center – Youngstown.
Mrs. Black was born August 19, 1940 in Piedmont, Alabama, a daughter of Cleve and Beulah Little Phillips. She was a 1958 graduate of South High School and attended Youngstown University. She had worked for 38 years as a surgical technician with Northside Hospital, retiring in 2000. Jewel joined Greater Friendship Baptist Church in 1955 under the pastorate of the then Rev. B. J. Meyers. She was a member of the Nurses Guild, We Care Ministries, Gregory Mission, the former Silver Trumpets Choir and was president of the Willing Workers. She was also a member of the National Council of Negro Women and the Protestant Family Services.
She leaves to forever cherish her beloved memories, her husband, Ronald, whom she married in 1981; two stepsons, Kevin (Leisa) Black of Cleveland and Karl Black of Ohio; two grandsons, Kevin, Jr. and David Black; a sister, Mary G. Brown of Youngstown; sister-in-law, Mary (Fred) Willis of Youngstown; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert and Hubert Phillips.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon at the church, funeral services will follow. Arrangements entrusted to the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
