Services will be 12 noon Wednesday, October 3, 2018, at Greater Friendship Baptist Church, for Mr. Henry “Tony” Axel, affectionately known as “Coach Axel”, who departed this life September 27, 2018 at Hospice House with his loving family by his side.
He was born June 15, 1951 in Youngstown, a son of Henry and Ellen Hubbard Axel. He was a 1970 graduate of Hubbard High School. He was a member of Greater Friendship Baptist Church where he served in the Male Chorus and Sunday School Ministries. He coached Little League Football at McGuffey Center, inspiring several young men to go on to Pro Football. He took in several homeless people to protect them from the cold. He had been employed at the Fisher Body Plant at General Motors in Lordstown and was a member of United Auto Workers Local Union 1714.
He leaves to cherish his memory and to rejoice in his peace, his mother of Liberty; his wife of 43 years, the former Noreen Morris, whom he married June 11, 1975; a daughter Summer Axel of Niles; a son Autumn (Lina) Axel of W. Va.; his siblings; Maxine Axel of Hubbard, Jeff (Georgianna) Axel of Dayton, Vera Dawan of Youngstown; Elder James (Claudia) Axel of Aberdeen, MD.; William (Charlene) Chislom of Youngstown; Dawn Axel of Austintown and Mary Donnell of Youngstown; four grandchildren Jimmy Rogers III, Kaiden Axel, Noah Axel and Anthony De Marco; a special cousin Cherilyn Chandler of Liberty; two Aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; half sisters and brothers Tony, Sudie, Theresa, and Gilbert Axel all of Canton.
He was preceded in death by his father Henry Axel; Grandparents Willie Mae and Jeff Hubbard; an aunt Anna Mae Jackson; a brother Richard Chislom ; an uncle and his wife James and Eleanor Hubbard. Friends may call one hours prior to the service 10:00-11 a.m. at the church. Arrangements entrusted to L.E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home.
