Mr. Turner was born May 31, 1948 in Youngstown, a son of James and Neather Thornton Turner.  He was a 1966 graduate of South High School and attended Youngstown College (now known as Youngstown State University).  He had been employed at A & P Supermarket, Penn Central Railroad, B & O Railroad as a dispatcher, and as Director of Transportation for WRTA for 30 years, retiring in 2000.  He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, its Male Chorus and Finance Ministry.  He was a former member of the Buckeye Elks. As a young man, Alfonso played the saxophone and had sometimes played taps for the VFW Donald Lockett post 6488.   He enjoyed being with his family and friends, and had many hobbies: fishing, music, rebuilding and racing high performance cars, billiards, and home improvements. He thoroughly enjoyed the Cleveland Indians, Browns and Cavalier Teams.

He leaves to cherish his legacy and memories, his beloved wife, the former Jacalyn Winkfield; two daughters, Nicole (Jamey) Duell of Richmond, VA and Linda (Edward) Long of Austintown; two brothers, Anthony (Sandra) Turner of Canal Winchester and Allen Turner of Washington, DC; six grandchildren; his two best friends who were like brothers to him, Zakir Baraka and James Adams; his nephew, Anthony (Mary) Turner, Jr. of Gahanna; his niece, Charissa (Michael) Campbell of Pickerington; great nephew, Michael “Cam” Campbell II of Pickerinton; his goddaughter, Jamie Popoola of Maryland; and a host of family and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019  from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church.  Arrangements entrusted to the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
