Kathryn Jane Hawks- Haney, 80, died peacefully on August 2, 2017 at Hospice of the Valley in Boardman Ohio. Kathryn was born in Youngstown, Ohio to the late Roland and Mary Edith McMillen Hawks on August 17, 1937.   Kathryn attended the Youngstown public schools. She was a member of the Temple Emmanuel Seventh – Day Adventist Church where she served as Praise and Worship Leader, Choir Director and Minister of Music for several years.

In the late 70’s Kathryn began her radio broadcasting career on WGFT and other local radio stations including 102 JAMS. Her broadcast career stretched over a 20 year period,  Kathryn served 4 years as a member on the Youngstown Board of Education; and became a certified Emergency Foster Parent from January 1977 thru 1996, providing Foster Care services for over 200 children.

Kathryn was well known in the area as the Founder and Director of a Non-Profit Organization called " Give the Children A Chance," an organization for at-risk youngsters.   It began as a 300 voice children's traveling choir, later maturing and expanded into a variety of community service programs.  In 2016 Kathryn was awarded  a community revitalization grant through the Raymond John Wean Foundation which provided economic development on the lower east side, providing summer employment for local youth. 

Her hobbies were singing, poetry, swimming, reading, journaling (hundreds of them) and spending time with her two beloved cat’s “Brown Baby” and “Calie.” Kathryn was also a devoted member of the Global Prayer Hot line Ministry.

Kathryn is survived by her sister, Judith Marie Callion of Warren, Ohio; two daughters; Edith Cordero (Christopher) of Arizona and Lisa Hawks – Robbins of Berrien Springs, Michigan; son Robert Nolan Hawks of Youngstown, Ohio; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren children; two nephews;  and number of other relatives and close friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Haney.

 Friends may call on Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Temple Emmanuel SDA Church, 108 W. Indianola Avenue, 44507.  Funeral services will follow immediately at 11:00 a.m.
