Mrs. Edna Lee Hamlette, 89, of Youngstown was called home by the Lord to direct and play for His heavenly choir on Thursday, January 25, 2018.
Mrs. Hamlette was born November 12 1928 in New Castle, PA, a daughter of Walker and Willie Beatrice Griffin Alexander. She was a 1946 graduate of New Castle High School; received her cosmetology licenses from the Renee School of Cosmetology; attended Dana School of Music; and was a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). She was a musician for various churches in the area. Edna had been employed as a Director of Nursing at the Northside Nursing Home for 15 years, a caregiver for 17 years with Ohio Mentor, and taught music to many area musicians. She was a member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church and its music ministry. She enjoyed social games, crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, spider solitaire soap operas and all types of music.
She leaves to cherish her legacy and beloved memories, four children, Ronald A. (Loretta) Stevens, Carlton E. Stevens, Jewel E. Stevens and Michael Randall all of Youngstown; a sister, Beatrice Mae Bell of Oakland, California; a daughter-in-law, Sherry Stevens; 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Arthur Steven (the father of her children) and William Hamlette; two sons, Ricky L. Stevens and Arthur Lamont Stevens; siblings, James Alexander, Johnny Alexander and Juanita Slade Baker; and a grandson, Edward LaRon Stevens.
A Musical Tribute will be held on Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. Friends may call on Friday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church. Funeral services will follow immediately at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
