Bishop McCarthy Hayes, 85, of Youngstown, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Health Center – Youngstown.

Bishop Hayes was born July 2, 1931 in Youngstown, a son of Cladyes and Emma Robinson Hayes.  He was a graduate of Youngstown City Schools and received his pilot license many years ago. Bishop Hayes was a member of Beulah Temple United Holy Church in Youngstown and had been on the foreign mission field since the 1960’s.   He and his wife Lois were called to the Foreign Mission field where they worked for 28 years; and as a result, the Hayes Mission Station was founded in Liberia, West Africa in 1968.  They opened a school and a church and began to educate and teach the Christian faith to the people of Liberia.  This was his true passion, to love the people of Liberia, to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with them, and to impact a nation.  He was consecrated Bishop in 1983 and served as pastor of Pentecostal Tabernacle United Holy Church for over 14 years.  Bishop Hayes also served as the Vice President and President of the Northwestern District of the United Holy Church of America, Inc.

He leaves to forever cherish his legacy, his beloved wife, the former Mary Lois Farley; two daughters, Mclarsee (Hasim) Patmon of Youngstown and Faith Hayes of Birmingham, Alabama; a son, Mark (Portia) Hayes of the Bahamas; 13 grandchildren, including , Ashanti Patmon of Youngstown whom he reared; siblings, Joann Kemp of Washington, DC, Norris Hayes of Santa Maria, CA, McCoy (Carol) Hayes of Youngstown, Marva Dean Wilson and Gladys Wilson both of Detroit, MI; sisters-in-law,  Ida Mae Hayes and Dr. Louise Hayes both of Youngstown; a host of sons and daughters in Liberia, West Africa; and a host of loving family, church family and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, Cladyes, Jr., Earl, and Jerome.

Bishop Hayes will be remembered as a humble man of great faith, a teacher, and a preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 17th , from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the House of Prayer, 2016 Wick Street, SW, Warren, Ohio.  Visitation hours will be Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.  Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m.  Interment will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20th at Tod Homestead Cemetery.  Arrangements entrusted to the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
