Services will be Saturday 10:00 am April 8, 2017 at the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Mrs. Alice Gertrude Shelton 92; of Youngstown who departed this life  Friday, March, 31, 2017 peacefully in her sleep. After a lengthy illness at home with family by her side.

Mrs. Shelton was born February 4, 1925 in Richmond, Virginia, a daughter of Andrew and Marie Eggleston Monroe. She was married to the late Charles Edward Shelton for 75 years, who passed away in 2000. She was employed as a dentist assistant in Richmond, Virginia, and nurse’s aide at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown.  She was a member of Alpha & Omega First Baptist Church. Mrs. Shelton help established the first, Kimmel Brook Baptist Church with Mrs. Ora Barrett in 1963. Alice also established the first 24 hour Day Care Center In Youngstown, known as Little Tot’s Day Care from 1978 to 2009.She always took pride in providing the best quality care for the children and supporting the mothers, often with the assistance of her family and friends.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories, 11 children,  Willie (Joanne) Monroe, Evonne (Earl) Williams, Elaine (William) Johnson, Andrea (Norman) Braxton, Wilahemia (John) Frasier, Vernaide Shelton, Rita Shelton, Skeeter Shelton, Gale”lady bug” Shelton, Denise Shelton and Steven (Pia) Shelton, two stepchildren; Rev. Charles Thorton and Sandra Thorton; two sisters Elnora ( George) Archer, and, Ethel Johnson, a brother Frank Monroe, sister- in- law Zelma Yancey, a daughter- in- law, Toni Shelton; 39 grandchildren, 114 great grandchildren and numerous great-great grand children, family and friends.

Besides her parents &husband, she was preceded in death by her son Charles Edward Jr.,  brothers; Andrew and Jack Monroe, sister, Carol Monroe, sisters- in- law Lorraine, Lillian, Mary, Ann and Pearl, brother- in- laws John, Robert, Henry, Dick and James.

Friends may call one hour prior to service at the Funeral Home.
